At long last- an Excel function for calculating soil texture
What it does and how it works
This Excel Add-in contains a single function which determines the soil texture according to UKAS from the sand and clay fractions entered
- Perfect for automatically determining textures from columns of data
- A useful tool for labs, students, and soil scientists
- Available for download FREE OF CHARGE
- Interfaces easily into any version of Microsoft Excel
This function was developed by Eric Crouch to speed up the processing of soil texture data to the British classification system. We hope that you will find it useful and it will save you hours of looking up the values on the texture triangle from which it is derived.
In order to get the function working in Excel, here's what you need to do:
- Click HERE to download the .xla file
- Save the document in a convenient location
- Say YES to any pop-ups asking if you're sure you want to download the file
- Load up Excel
- Select the 'Tools' menu and click on 'Add-Ins'
- Click 'Browse'
- Navigate to the saved file 'Soil-Texture.xla'
- Each time you open Excel, the function will now be available
- To determine the texture, simply enter the formula with the sand and clay contents in the form '=texture(sand, clay)'
- Alternatively, use the insert function command, the texture function will appear on the list of user-defined functions
Please note that this function outputs texture classes according to the British UKAS system as described in BS3882:2007. This differs slightly from American and Canadian standards. All reasonable efforts have been made to ensure that the function performs correctly but no liability is accepted by SLC for any errors incurred from the use of this function.
